Passing on the Gift “POG” is central to our work. By passing on the gift beneficiaries become donors. Each family that takes part in a Bóthar project formally agrees to pass-on the first female offspring born to their animal to another pre-selected family in the community. With pig programmes first-born sows are passed to neighbouring families while boars are moved across communities to ensure that there is no element of in-breeding. In the case of the bee, rabbit and chicken projects the recipient family must save money earned from the sale of produce and offspring and with this must purchase breeding rabbits, flocks of chicks or hives to pass on to other families that have trained to receive them. In this way the original animal donated by you is multiplied and over time many families and whole communities benefit.
It strengthens communities by creating a cycle of giving, transforming recipients into donors, and ensures sustainability, dignity and self-reliance. It is hugely uplifting to see project participants pass on part of their livelihood to their neighbours, creating a network of support and a community of sustainable farmers.
It truly is the gift that keeps on giving...
