Malawi Clean Water Appeal
Right now, how close are you to a clean water supply? I’m guessing not too far.
Imagine if your nearest water point was a few kilometres away.
Imagine you had to make this journey multiple times a day because your family needs you to do it.
Imagine, as a young female, the fear of sexual assault you face on the journey. There and back.
Welcome to the Karonga district, rural Malawi, where this is a part of life for so many.
Your gift can keep people safe by giving families access to clean water.
I need your help. I know I always write to you asking for help but I feel so strongly about this particular matter, because, with your help, we can really make a difference to so many.
The picture I portrayed above is happening. Daily.
I really don’t mean to upset you, but I feel we must do something. I am the mother of a teenage girl. I am sickened to think of the dangers that children of the same age are faced with just to get clean water.
I imagine you feel the same?
Bóthar has committed to helping the community in the Karonga district by improving access to safe and clean water for 5,000 people including 1,000 vulnerable women and girls.
Prevailing situations compel households to use contaminated water from unprotected shallow wells and rivers resulting in high incidences of water-borne diseases.
The project is targeting these areas as they are prone to severe flooding, where boreholes are inundated during the wet season and cannot be used during a significant proportion of the year.
How Bóthar will help:
Funding for this project will be in the region of €120,000 over two years.
We need your help to deliver this basic right to these families.
The project will:
- develop 2 community-based solar-powered water distribution systems in the Karonga district
- increase access to safe and clean drinking water to 5,000 households and reduce cases of cholera and other water-borne diseases in the targeted communities.
- promote community-led ownership and awareness on water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) amongst the communities in the target areas.
