Cows
Gift of an in-calf dairy heifer
How this helps
Bóthar’s Irish dairy cows have become life saving heroes in many parts of the world. Irish dairy cows will produce up to 20 times as much nutritious milk every day as the average local cow.
Milk & cheese from the living gift of a cow instantly improves the diet of the recipient family and also produces enough milk for them to sell and earn an income. Suddenly mothers and fathers are in a position to purchase food and medicine for their families. They can send their children to school!
Bóthar also engages in cross-breeding Irish bulls with local cows, producing an animal that gives approximately 25% of an Irish cow’s milk yield - still four times more productive than the local animal!
Your donation also covers training & preparation of a family to receive an animal, transportation of the animal & full veterinary back up for a number of years.
Full training & transport costs
How this helps
Your donation covers full training for the recipient family through our in country partners. Also included are the significant transportation costs of the animal & full veterinary back up for a number of years. Once a family is accepted onto the Bóthar programme, they begin a structured training programme where they learn how to care for their animal, successfully grow fodder, the Pass On programme and they are assessed for suitable housing for their animal to show their commitment to their life-saving gift.

Bóthar works with Dovea Genetics in Thurles, Co. Tipperary to provide the best quality bull semen. In 2018, The Rwandan government requested Bóthar to source 4 Irish bulls for the National Breeding Station in Kigali, Rwanda due to the difference Irish bull semen has made to the local herd over the years. The four bulls named Munster, Ulster, Leinster and Connacht were transported successfully in October 2018.
